While Tahiti may lay the claim to black pearls in the Pacific, Hawai‘i has its own traditional adornments of renown. Over the past decade, collectors and jewelry lovers, both in the islands and abroad, have turned their eyes on leis made from precious pūpū, or shells, from Ni‘ihau—the westernmost of the main Hawaiian Islands, right off Kaua‘i. After all, head to any cultural fete and you’ll surely spot Ni‘ihau leis amid Sig Zane prints and Louis Vuitton monograms. - See more at: http://modernluxury.com/modern-luxury-hawaii/story/culture-of-glamour#sthash.yndGcy7C.dpuf
